Roundworms (Capillaria)
Capillaria is a form of roundworm which is an endoparasite that lives in the hedgehogs intestine.
Capillaria has no visible symptoms as such, when in rescue symptoms can be shown as weight loss, lethargy and diarrhea.
Hedgehogs can get these parasites by eating eathrthworms and snails.
Capillaria can only be found 3 weeks after the hedgehog has contracted it.
To diagnose capillaria, the only real way to test is via a faecal sample under the microscope.
There are medications we use to treat these and the average medication takes 3 weeks then another sample is tested to make sure that the parasite is gone.
How you can help prevent Capillaria.
You can help to reduce capillaria in hedgehogs by feeding them in your garden. If they have a good food source they might not be tempted to eat worms or snails therefore reducing the chance of getting it.
